Growth Habit

Water Needs

Light

Grows best in bright, indirect light, but will grow well in most light environments except full shade. Provide some protection from extreme sun in summer.

Adjust watering to suit the environment.

Temperature

A very hardy plant that will cope well in most temperatures. However, water and good airflow play an important part.

Water more when it's hot and dry, less when humid, and hold off when cold and damp.

Frost Tolerance

It is not frost tolerant, but can handle very low temperatures if under cover and dry.

Soil, Potting & Fertilising

Potting
Requires no soil or pot.

It is best mounted on a tree branch, hung with floral wire or jute, or mounted to any suitable substrate of your choice that does not hold water.

Fertilizing
A weak (1/4 strength) fertilizer in the growing season (late winter and spring) applied once every one to two weeks is adequate if kept inside or under cover. If outside where it gets rain and detritus, it does not generally require fertilizer. Liquid orchid fertilizers are good.

Maintenance

Requires very little maintenance. Trim any brown leaf ends and remove dead leaves and spent flowers.

Pests & Ailments

Generally Tillandsia 'Houston' is very hardy with minimal pest issues or diseases.

Pests
Mealy bugs may occasionally infest, but are easily removed when first seen. The plants can be attractive to snails (more for use as shelter) and birds for nesting materials.

Ailments
Over-watering and lack of air movement resulting in rot or fungal infection is the main cause of demise. Adjust watering to suit the conditions.

Pet / Child Friendliness

Non toxic. Pet and child friendly.
